Year 1

Term 4 – Paws, Claws and Whiskers

Hello Year 1!

I hope you have all had a lovely and relaxing half term – you have all worked really hard with your home learning and I have loved seeing all the work that you have produced. For now, we will be continuing with our home learning via the Padlet. You can submit your work onto the Padlet or email it across to me – Mrs Lee – at the end of each day.

I would like to introduce to you a new member of staff that will be working in our class. We have Mrs Slater joining us who will work alongside myself, Mrs Dean and Mrs Stoffel to support your learning. I know you will all make her feel welcome in the classroom when we return.

For daily home learning please visit the Padlet and join our zoom sessions twice a day at 9.30am and 2.45pm. These links will all be sent to you through the text message service or email.

Term 4 – Paws, Claws and Whiskers

In Literacy this term, we will be recapping our skills of story writing to create our own adventure story. We will be using Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak as our inspiration. We will continue to follow the Talk for Writing approach, which enables us to practice speaking what we want to say before we begin to write. For this, we will be taking part in a range of activities, such as creating actions to remember what happens in the story, improving our comprehension skills to answer questions about the story and creating our own Wild Thing!

We will also be learning how to write instructions, using Mr Wolf’s Pancakes as a stimulus and we will be creating our own instructions to help us make pancakes – I can’t wait to eat them!

As well as this, we will be continuing with learning our letters and sounds by following the Read Write Inc programme each day.

In Maths this term, we will continue to follow the White Rose Maths programme. Our unit this half term is measurement. We will be learning how to measure the height and length of items using standard and non-standard units of measure, then moving onto learning how to measure the mass, capacity and volume of objects. For this unit, we will be taking part in a range of practical activities to help secure our knowledge and learn the different vocabulary associated with measurement.

We will be continuing with our learning about the different varieties of common animals and will start the term by recapping our learning from last term. Then, we will be looking at describing and comparing these common varieties of animals and will end the term by learning about the human body, the senses and the basic needs for both human and animals.

As our topic this half term is Paws, Claws and Whiskers, in Art we will be learning how to use different types of sketch pencils to create different effects in a piece of Art. Following this, we will be looking at different pieces of art and discussing what we like and don’t like and will be including these critiques into our own Art pieces.

In our Geography lessons, we will be learning how to read maps to locate different countries all around the world. From this, we will be researching where animals live and describing the physical features of their environment.

Our PSHE question this term is – What can we do with money? We will be looking at the different forms of money, how we obtain money and learning the difference between needs and wants.

In RE this term, we will be continuing with our learning of the Islamic faith and will be learning about prayer, identifying the key features of a mosque and looking at religious festivals such as Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr.

For our Music topic this term, we will be continuing to listen, evaluate and appraise different pieces of music.  We will be focusing on Round And Round, a Bossa Nova Latin style and will be continuing our learning of pulse, rhythm, pitch and dynamics of the music.

Our Computing topic this term will be looking at data, the different categories of data and how it can be collected.

In PE this term, we will be learning all about striking and fielding in a range of different sports.

Our PE will now be on a Wednesday. Please can all children come to school dressed in their PE kit.

Thank you for your continued support – I look forward to another great term. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Mrs Lee, Mrs Dean, Mrs Stoffel and Mrs Slater.
