Year 2 - Summer 1 - Scented Garden

 

Welcome to Year 2’s home page and Summer Term 1

 

This half term our topic is called “Scented Garden

 

We will be carrying on using the Talk4Writing approach in English and have started the half term looking at alternative Traditional Tales.  We are using the text “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” by Eugene Trivizas.  We have been familiarising ourselves with the text through many different activities, we will be learning different skills and developing our knowledge of using conjunctions and expanded noun phrases before planning and writing our own alternative Traditional Tales.  Later in the half term we will be looking at the book “The Secret Sky Garden” by Linda Sarah. 

 

In Maths, we will be continuing to the White Rose schemes of learning.  We have been finishing off learning about fractions this week.  The rest of the half term we will be building on our knowledge on the four operations of Maths, looking at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We will be exploring different methods and checking our answers using inverse operations. 

 

In our Science lessons this half term we will be focusing on living things-what it means to be living and we will then be looking at animal and plant habitats and how habitats are suitable for the needs of different living things.  We will then be furthering our knowledge on living things by looking at food chains and identifying sources of foods.

 

In Geography we will be delving into our previous learning about the world and the United Kingdom to identify the seas and oceans around us.  We will be looking in our local, school environment, looking at the natural and man-made materials around us.  We will be looking at weather patterns- locally and globally.

 

In Art we will be exploring the natural world around us- working on our observational sketching skills, developing our work on using different artistic media to develop colour and shading.  We will then be making floral collages and pressing flowers.

 

In Design Technology we will be working on our use of different tools and techniques.  We will be planning our ideas, making and then evaluating our finished products.  We will be looking at designing a mud kitchen, making scented and natural playdough and then looking at making tubs and planters. 

 

In Religious Education this half term we will be looking at comparing what we already know about the Christian faith with new knowledge about the Islamic faith.

The Year Two Team  

Term 4 - Paws, Claws and Whiskers

 

In our core subjects we will be continuing to use the White Rose schemes of learning in Maths which will see use developing our understanding of 2D and 3D shapes before moving on to look at fractions of shapes and numbers.

 

We will be using Read Write Inc. in Phonics and will be continuing our work on speed sounds and compound words.

 

In English we have been looking at information texts about animals and have focused on the book “The Clue is in the Poo” by Andy Seed which we will go on to use to write and publish our own animal information texts. We will follow up our work on non-fiction texts by looking at animal poetry. We will be learning to perform poetry using “The Owl and the Pussycat” poem and then focus on writing poetry using the book “Perfectly Peculiar Pets” by Elli Woollard.

 

Topic

 

We will be doing lots of Geographical work, Art and Design Technology and Science.

 

In Geography we will be looking at the world and where animals are located in the world. We will be thinking about how animals are suited to the geographical locations and which animals live in different continents. In Geography we will be using lots of maps, globes and atlases to help us to develop our knowledge and understanding.

 

In Science we will continue to build on our work on animals from last half term. We will be looking at animal’s offspring and the basic survival needs of animals. We will be starting to develop our knowledge of the human body, thinking about what makes us healthy. We will learn about the impacts and the importance of exercise, a healthy balanced diet and also good health and hygiene.

 

In Design Technology we will be continuing our work on designing and planning, then the steps of creating and making before evaluating. We will be linking our work in DT to making animal enclosures food packaging and making a healthy balanced meal and creating our own made up animal puppets.

 

In Art our focus will be animal prints and patterns. We will look at cultural patterns from tribes in Africa, using pencil skills to create patterns and texture and using different artistic media to create colours and shades all linked to animal patterns and prints.

 

In RE we will be looking into Christianity. We will be looking at how the world was created according to the Bible, the celebrations and practises of birth according to Christians and what it means to belong.

Mathematics

In Maths, we will continue to use the White Rose schemes of learning and to look at Multiplication and Division for most of the half term before moving on to Statistics at the end of the term.

English

In English, we will be doing lots of setting descriptions through our class book “Man on the Moon (A Day in the Life of Bob” by Simon Bartram. We will them move on to writing Information Reports about Space. 

Read, Write, Inc.

We will continue to use the Read Write Inc. scheme for our daily phonics.  Miss Housley-Stott will run a daily Zoom meetings at 10a.m. for your Speed Sounds lesson and then use the video links on the Padlet to do your longer words lessons.

 

Science

In Science, we will be discovering and researching common varieties of animals.  We will be looking at scientific vocabulary including, carnivore, omnivore and herbivore and then will move on to look at the human body.

 

Topic

Our topic work, this term is heavily based around Design and Technology and using your minds creatively. In our History lessons, we will also be finding about the first man on the moon and the events of the moon landing.

Hello to all parents and children and welcome to Year 2.

It has been really nice getting to know your children over the past couple of weeks.  I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you better over the year.  

We start our first half term with a topic called “Street Detectives”, which is all about getting to know our local area and the changes and development of Spalding over the years.  We will be delving into our local history and the geographical changes in the area.

Maths

In Maths we follow the White Rose schemes of work which will see us build on our knowledge and development of skills from where we left off in Year 1.  We will start this half term with a unit on Place Value, looking at and discovering the values of numbers up to 100.  We will then move on to developing our skills and knowledge of methods of addition and subtraction, working with two digit numbers up to and past 100.  The whole time we will be working on our fluency and building on our ability to explain and reason whilst solving a variation of problems.  

English

In English we will be following the Talk for Writing approach. This means that we will practice speaking what we want to say before we begin to write. We will also be using actions to help us remember what we want to write about. In the first part of the term we will be exploring and writing alternative versions of Traditional Tales, whilst building on our vocabulary and phonics skills.  We will be working hard on our handwriting, reading and spellings along side our usual English sessions

We will also be continuing with our Read Write Inc programme each day to practice our letter sounds. 

PE day is Friday – Please come in your PE kit for the whole day. 

We are lucky to have a few adults working within Year 2 throughout different times of the week.  We have myself Miss Housley-Stott who will be working full time across the week, Mrs Bailey who will be working within the classroom from Tuesday-Friday and Mrs Webster who will be joining us in class on a Monday and Tuesday.  We are all very friendly and approachable so please come and have a chat or raise any worries and concerns with any member of the team we are all happy to help with all problems, big or small.  We look forward to working with you over the coming academic year.
